How to Use a Forex Position Size Calculator
Position sizing is the single most important risk management decision a forex trader makes on every trade. This forex position size calculator works out the correct lot size based on your account balance, how much of that balance you’re willing to risk on this specific trade, and how far away your stop loss is in pips. Get the position size right, and a losing trade costs you exactly the percentage you planned — no more, no less.
Why position size matters more than entry timing
New traders often focus heavily on finding the perfect entry point while ignoring position size entirely, trading a fixed lot size regardless of the setup. This means a trade with a tight 10-pip stop risks far less than a trade with a 100-pip stop at the same lot size — an inconsistency that makes account-wide risk unpredictable. Calculating position size per trade keeps your risk exposure consistent no matter how the setup looks.
A common rule of thumb
Many professional traders risk between 0.5% and 2% of their account balance on any single trade. Enter your balance, set your risk percentage, add your stop loss distance in pips and the pip value for your pair, and the calculator instantly returns the lot size and unit size to use — no manual multiplication required.
